In United States Internal Revenue Service grants nonprofit tax exempt status to organizations meeting their guidelines. Such organizations are commonly referred to by the IRS regulation, 501 (c) 3.

501 (c) 3 organizations are prohibited from engaging in certain pursuits, such as influencing elections and other political activity.
